Glossary

The terms you will meet most often

Carbon markets come with their own vocabulary. These are the words used most across this site and in the CTX Rules, in plain English.

Carbon credit

A tradable certificate for one tonne of CO₂e that a project has reduced, avoided or removed. A registry issues it under a standard, once the result has been independently verified.

tCO₂e

Tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. It expresses other greenhouse gases, such as methane and nitrous oxide, as the amount of CO₂ that would cause the same warming over a set period, usually 100 years.

Retirement

Cancelling a credit in its registry for good, so that nobody can sell or use it again. Retirement is the step that lets you count a credit against your own emissions.

Vintage

The year in which the reduction or removal behind a credit took place. It is not the year the credit was issued or bought.

Registry

The database that issues credits with unique serial numbers and records who holds them, every transfer and every retirement. It is what stops the same tonne being counted twice.

Standard

The rulebook a project is certified against. It sets the methods for measuring reductions or removals and requires independent checks. Gold Standard and Verra's VCS are two examples.

Spot market

A market where assets change hands for immediate delivery and payment at the current price, rather than on a set date in the future.

T+0

Short for "trade date plus zero days": settlement on the day of the trade itself. Credits and cash change hands the same day.

ITMO

An Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcome: a reduction or removal transferred between countries under Article 6 and counted towards the buying country's climate target. The host country makes a corresponding adjustment so the tonne is not claimed twice.

Article 6

The part of the Paris Agreement that lets countries cooperate to meet their national climate targets. Article 6.2 covers transfers agreed between countries; Article 6.4 sets up a crediting mechanism supervised by the UN. Its core rules were agreed at COP26 in 2021, with further detail settled at later COPs.

CDM

The Clean Development Mechanism, set up under the Kyoto Protocol. It let projects in developing countries earn Certified Emission Reductions (CERs), each worth one tonne of CO₂e. The Article 6.4 mechanism is taking over its role.

CORSIA

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, adopted by the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization in 2016. Airlines offset growth in international flight emissions above a baseline, using eligible units.
