Carbon Trade eXchange (CTX) has run a spot market for voluntary carbon credits since 2008. Corporate buyers, project developers and brokers use it to buy, sell and retire certified credits.
Wayne Sharpe founded CTX in 2008, after a year of research and development. It was the world's first digital exchange for spot trading voluntary carbon credits, and the first commercial partner to connect with the UN's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) registry.
The idea has not changed since. A carbon market should be reliable, open and easy to reach, whatever the size of the business using it. Sellers list certified credits at their own price. Buyers pay cash and receive the credits the same day. Every trade settles through a direct link to the registry that holds them.
Our members include corporate buyers, project developers and brokers. They trade 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in credits issued under recognised standards and registries, from Gold Standard and the UN CDM to BioCarbon, the Global Carbon Registry and the Universal Carbon Registry.
Registries and standardsThe spot market sits at the centre. Around it, CTX runs accounts, tools and registries for particular kinds of trader and sector.

The principles behind how we run the exchange.
Offsetting should be the last step, not the first. We ask companies to measure their footprint and cut what they can. When they offset what is left, they should use the most responsible credits available.

Sellers set their prices and buyers see them live. Trade data exports for your records, and our rules and fees are published for every member.
The exchange serves a small company offsetting a single event and an institution trading at volume, in the same marketplace.
Credits come from certified projects and move through direct registry links, so you always know where yours are held and when they were retired.
